Description | There are a lot of different Phellinus species in Queensland. They come in all different shapes and sizes. Some are hoof-shaped, some are crusts and others, like this one, have a flat top. We saw a couple of trees with this sort of shelf-like Phellinus on them. The fruiting bodies were mostly just above the ground, at the base the tree. This one had a large, hammer-head shaped fruiting body, with what looked to be an infection of another fungus in its "mouth". It reminds me of the character of Maccus in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - the cursed sailor with the hammer-head shark's head. |
