Description | This is a Hesthesis species (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) and not a wasp which is quite strikingly like in life. I realised it was odd when I saw it feeding on Melaleuca flowers because it was not using its antennae as wasps do. See succeeding picture for a side view. Batesian mimic; see Plate 6 in "The Insects of Australia" vol 1. There are several Hesthesis species on this plate as mimics! This species was i.d by Tony from the original paper by Carter, 1928 of specimens collected by E. Sutton from Stanthorpe! Photo compiled from a stack of 20 photos taken using a Canon 7D and Canon 100mm macro lens controlled by DSLR Remote Pro for Mac and combined using Helicon Focus on an iMac. |
